CNR 2013: Exhibition: Sara Dittrich (USA)

Sara Dittrich is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Baltimore, Maryland USA. She creates objects, installations, and performances that use the forms of musical instruments and robotic media to investigate the dynamic acts of listening, communicating and moving.

Sara often incorporates the everyday sounds of the body, such as a voice, heartbeat, or step into her work.  She currently studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) where she will obtain her BFA in interdisciplinary sculpture in spring 2014. Sara recently participated in the exchange program at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague with the sculpture studio headed by Dominik Lang.

When creating the three R.U.R. LEGO MINDSTORMS robots, Domin, Fabry, and Helena I was limited to one LEGO MINDSTORMS kit per character. I also had to make sure they could move on their own and have the right sensors to guide them. These restrictions helped me focus on the essential visual details of each character.

I adorned Domin, a classic businessman, with a tux inspired front complete with a bowtie and suitcase. Fabry wears a lab coat and glasses. Helena has long hair and wears a dress. Though the forms of these characters are abstracted and simplified it always amazes me to see how these individual parts and pieces can come together to form something we know and recognize.
