CNR 2016: Lectures: Edward Scheer (AUS): The Robots are Coming but don't worry they can't act

Robotic mediations are effecting change in culture, society and in all aspects of human life but while fields such as cinema and screen studies have extensively canvassed the question of robotic participation in contemporary life, theatre as 'the last human venue' (Read 2008) has not developed this theme to the same extent nor has it been the focus of significant research in relation to robotics. This paper seeks to address the aesthetic conditions of an increasingly non-human modality in theatre, performance and time based art and, in particular, the impact in these domains of robotics. The topic of anthropomorphism will structure the examples that follow in which I outline theatrical and performative approaches to robotics along differently anthropomorphic lines.
