CNR 2014: Lectures: Czech Technical University (CZE): Martin Saska (CZE): Swarms of flying robots inspired by natural flocks

Intelligent and Mobile Robotics Group, Department of Cybernetics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague.

Dr. Martin Saska is a research fellow at the Department of Cybernetics, CTU Prague since 2009. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Wuerzburg, Germany, within the Ph.D. program of Elite Network of Bavaria. He is author of about 50 journals and conference publications (>20 in WoS; >30 Times Cited).

He spent one semester as a research fellow at the Control and Decision Group of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, and together 2 months at GRASP laboratory of University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Martin Saska is a reviewer for several impacted journals as well as a program committee member of relevant international conferences. His interests include cooperation and control of multi-robot systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, swarm robotics, formation driving and stabilization.

Swarms of flying robots inspired by natural flocks
Latest achievements of scientific endeavors towards autonomous groups of micro aerial vehicles will be shown in this demonstration. In particular, swarming mechanisms inspired by behaviors observed in flocks of birds, schools of fish or swarms of insect will be presented. These mechanisms rely on artificial sensors of flying robots mimicking functionalities of sensory organs of living creatures and on a complex group behavior arising from a proper combination of simple individual rules controlling independent swarm entities.

The purpose of the presented research of unmanned aerial vehicles conducted at the Czech Technical University in Prague consists in the possibility of deploying large groups of closely cooperating robots in real-world scenarios, outside laboratories. Beyond, analyses of emerging behavioral patterns in nature-inspired artificial swarms may be a key instrument for better understanding of principles being observed in nature.
