Tour the Stairs: A new robot competition
Participate in the first edition of the service robotics competition Tour the Stairs which goal is to create robots that can carry food and beverage up and down and on flat terrain.
Inspired of the Grand Tours of Cycling which refers to the three major outdoor European professional cycling stage races: Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, the end goal of Tour the Stairs is to create a service robot which can carry things and navigate autonomously in both a "flat" (the floors) & "mountainous" (the stairs) terrain, plus to get the robot through all the challenges it shall solve on its road during an entire Tour the Stairs.
Tour the Stairs: The Service Robotics
Competition:
Many people in the service business, like servants in a cafe /
restaurant, or a nurse in a nursing home / hospital, walks and
carry a lot during a work day. In big buildings without an
elevator, and at the homes with elderly people, the robot can be a
helpful tool, which can make many people lives easier and provide
them a better quality of life if the robot is able to carry food,
beverage, and other things safety up and down the stairs for them
to the right destination.
To get the robot integrated in an environment of a house it is therefore necessary that it is user-friendly and that there is a high design quality added to the functionality of the service robot.
Tour the Stairs: The Service Robotics Competition will take place at Galerie NTK on 29 November.
Tour the Stairs: The LEGO MINDSTORMS Tour:
The Grand Tours of Cycling collects every year many people next to
the roads the riders are passing. They're looking forward to the
drama and to watch some of the big stars of cycling, when they at
the same time is having fun after been waiting for hours.
In a similar way
Tour the Stairs: The LEGO MINDSTORMS Tour is seeking
to be able to create some of the same kind of public behaviour when
the robots are on "the roads" like in a big shopping mall or
concept store, so the consumers can be entertained in a fun way
when they're out shopping. To make Tour the Stairs
succesfull in this context it is therefore necesary to have a focus
on Human Robot Interaction (HRI) and which kinds of parameters that
creates a good drama in a competition.
Tour the Stairs: The LEGO MINDSTORMS Tour is also thought to inspire teachers at the schools who would like to visualize maths, physics, biology, geography, history and culture for their pupils / students by integrating different kind of tasks which is inspired by various elements of the Grand Tours of Cycling.
Tour the Stairs: The LEGO MINDSTORMS Tour will take place at Galerie NTK on 29 November.
